What Happens If Your Cappadocia Balloon Flight Is Cancelled?
Getting up before dawn only to hear your balloon flight is cancelled is disappointing. But cancellations are common in Cappadocia and exist to keep you safe. Knowing how they work helps you plan and set the right expectations.
Why are flights cancelled?
Hot air balloons are very sensitive to wind, rain and visibility. Strong or shifting winds, rain, snow and thick fog all make flying unsafe. That's also why flights take place at sunrise, when the air is calmest.
Who makes the call?
Every morning, Turkey's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) decides whether balloons may fly, based on meteorological data. If permission isn't given, no balloon company in the region can fly. So a cancellation depends on that morning's weather, not on a single company.
When will you find out?
Sometimes the decision is clear the night before or very early in the morning. Other times guests are taken to the launch site and the final check happens there. If the flight is cancelled then, you're driven back to your hotel. We message or call you as soon as we hear.
What happens to your money?
With us, flights cancelled for weather are fully refunded. If there's availability, we can also move you to another morning, though we can't guarantee a seat the next day in busy periods. See details on our balloon tour page.
Which months have more cancellations?
Weather is usually more stable from April to October, so cancellations are less frequent then. From December to February, wind, snow and fog make them more likely. If you visit in winter, definitely plan a spare morning.
How to plan around cancellations
- Book your balloon for the first morning of your stay, so the remaining mornings are backups.
- Stay at least 2 nights if you can.
- Don't waste a cancelled morning: an underground city tour, a valley hike or wine tasting are great options that depend much less on the weather.
